Art by Jerry Cai – amazing artist and a true meme lord.

It started when I found a little game on DeviantArt by Jerry, it turns out he can code too. We spoke about making a game together, and pretty quickly had the design ready.

A pretty straight forward design by Jerry. When you smash people, they turn into little coins, which you can use to purchase more upgrades, so that next time you can go a little further – a classic positive loop.

The core gameplay loop has already been implemented – combat, shop purchases, and gym upgrades.

My brother made the music for the game and uploaded a video. Needless to say, he was not happy we scrapped the game.

Why it Failed

There was still quite a lot of work left, especially on level design and bosses. The last thing I remember working on was this boss:

An agitated king strapped to flying chickens wielding a fried chicken leg.

This was also a weird moment for Flash, we finally got GPU support, but at the same time, Flash hay days were already over.

Working on the game wasn’t a bad experience. The code was clean. The art was great. I think both of us sort of got tired of the concept, and slowly moved onto other things. This is sad considering how much I like this concept as I look back at it.

Takeaways

  • Keep the momentum!
  • Try and work on exciting tasks once in a while.
  • Distance yourself from emotional attachment to the concept – it’s a product!
